Once upon a time there was a little spork, that’s a spoon and fork combination, named Jebediah. He was neon green with freckles and he was kind of tall; as expected from a piece of kitchen equipment, he had no arms or legs. He was in town walking along the street at sunset, well, hopping. It was a warm, sunny, autumn day. Poor Jebediah was all alone in the world; he had no friends or family. He was an orphan who had no memory of his parents.
Jebediah did not know what to do to make friends; he tried everything. He was in clubs for things he could not stand. He tried out for sports he was horrible at, like when he was on the basketball team he kept making shots for the other team. He auditioned for every play. Jebediah was even on the math and debate teams when he stunk at both; when he was in a math competition, he couldn’t even figure out the simple equation of two multiplied by x equals four, which to your average kitchen utensil or food is a simple question. Jebediah just could not make friends no matter what he did. Even the chess team and glee club would not talk to him. He always felt unwanted and left out. All he wanted to do was fit in.
One day as Jebby, that’s Jebediah’s nickname, was walking along he happened to go by an alley. What he saw made him stop short. In the alley he saw a wild cherry flavored strudel. It was none other than Sammy Strudel, the biggest baddest bully of them all.
Sammy was being a jerk as usual. He was picking on a stroon, which is a straw and spoon crossed. He was calling the stroon names and pushing it. Jebby distinctly heard Sammy say “Hey Shrimp! Why don’t you eat some miracle grow so you’ll grow some!” That stuff is so rude, but it is not the worst thing yet.
Even worse was that the stroon was a girl. What kind of person picks on a girl? Sammy is such a meanie! After all, how much of a bully can you be?
All of a sudden Jebediah realized that it was Zummer from Drama class. He knew it was her because to him, she was a blue, one and a half foot tall goddess. He’d been crushing on her for three years but she never noticed him, which was no big surprise when no one else did either. He was going to rescue her from Sammy. This was his chance to make her notice him!
Jebediah straightened himself so he was as tall as possible, a whole whopping two feet tall. Then he went over to the brick wall at the beginning of the alley and rubbed his sporky top against the bricks to make sure that his tines were nice and pointy. He glared at Sammy. Sammy still had not noticed him and neither had Zummer. Jebby took a deep breath and barreled head first at Sammy Strudel.
The impact of the hit made Jebby and Sammy topple over to the hard, cement ground. Sammy hit his head and was knocked unconscious. Jebediah hastily stood up and looked over at Zummer. She was staring at them in shock.
“Let’s get out of here before the big jerk over there wakes up,” Jebby whispered to Zummer. So they both dashed out of the alley and over to the park across the street.
“I can not believe you did that to Sammy! You’re my hero!” Zummer exclaimed cheesily. After all, no one ever stood up to Sammy Strudel. Everyone was afraid of him, extremely afraid. No one would have ever guessed that lonely little Jebby the spork would ever be the one person to stand up to Sammy.
Zummer and Jebediah sat on the wooden park bench surrounded by flowers talking nonstop. The park looked beautiful in the golden orange glow of the fading sunset. It was even more spectacular when the sun hit the leaves, casting a red haze on everything.
She told him things about her that no one else knew. No one knew that Zummer was an orphan too. Jebby thought she fit in with everyone. He said, “But Zummer, you seem so popular. You always look like you fit in.”
Zummer agreed that it looked that way, she meant it to, but on the inside she never felt that way. “I’m different. No matter what I do I’ll always be different. I just try to blend in with everyone else,” she admitted awkwardly. It seemed like they were perfect for each other.
The more the two talked, the more Jebby liked her. He told Zummer that too. “You are one of the most beautiful girls I have ever seen. I think I’m falling for you,” he uttered while his cheeks were turning bright red.
Zummer called him sweet and admitted to liking him back. “ You’re the sweetest! And it’s ok, I like you too,” she laughed. She thought it was cute how he looked all embarrassed.
Zummer realized she had to leave. Before she did, she gave him a hug. Well, it was about as close to a hug as you can get without arms.
Jebby and Zummer were never apart after that day they shared together. They were both in total bliss. Neither one really cared if they fit in anymore. Jebediah really did fit in though, Zummer helped him, and he made great friends. Little Jebby the spork fit in! And they all lived happily ever after. WOOHOO!!
