A Child Knows

Mommy, why does Daddy hate me so
The five-year-old asks her mom
With a tear sliding down her rosy little cheek
And more springing from her blackened eye
What can a mother say to her child
To comfort them
And make them believe Daddy cares
When all she sees is her child crying and broken
A child knows that Daddy is supposed to care
A child knows that Daddy is supposed to love
So what are they supposed to think
When Daddy does not give hugs
He gives bruises
Mom, why don't you stop this
The teenager asks her mom
Wincing from the pain
Coming from the fresh red mark on her cheek
An older child knows what this is called
An older child knows this is not supposed to be
But what are they supposed to do
When this is all they have known
Since they were so small
Mommy, why didn't you do something
The thirteen-year-old asks her mother
Sounding like a little girl again
With a tear sliding down her cheek
Carrying makeup
That is covering her blackened eye
What can a mother say to her child
While staring down at her other child's grave
Knowing full well the reason for her death
Knowing she could have stopped it
Knowing Daddy just got too mad
The mother glances down
At the child that is left
And prays that she will not meet the same fate
Knowing that she herself might meet that fate
If she chooses to save the only thing left in this world
That truly matters to her anymore
The thirteen-year-old glances up
Looking at her mother
And whispers to her
Mommy, save me
A child knows when something is wrong
A child knows what love is supposed to be
And that is not the tears
The bruises
Or the beatings
A child knows
Child abuse is a serious matter that needs to be stopped. I've seen what it can do to families, they're just lucky enough for it to not have gone this far, but some others aren't so lucky. Please help put a stop to it. This poem is dedicated to the people who have gone through abuse, know someone going through it, or have lost a loved one because of it.
