Taking the overgrown path on her own
The girl follows it to a small creek
Tucked away in the woods
A secret spot
From a time not so long ago
She walks to the edge of the creek
And strolls along until she finds
What she was looking for
She takes a seat atop the rock
Heart-shaped and broken
Just within the creek's icy grip
Covered in thick, olive moss
This used to be their rock
Not so long ago
When they were in love
And nothing could go wrong
She sits on her half
Gazing at his
Picturing their moments here together
When each would sit on their own half
With only their hands intertwined
She will never forget those moments
The love they shared
This secret spot
They once held so dear
She glances away
As tears begin to spring in her eyes
She stares down into the creek
Listening to it whisper through the land
She notices a small piece of charcoal
No larger than a piece of sidewalk chalk
Resting on the edge of the creek
All by itself
She knows the water must have carried it
With some kind of memory attached
It was lucky enough to move on
To leave everything behind
She picks up the piece
And glances down at his side
Carefully brushing away some moss
Slowly she lowers the charcoal to the surface
And begins to write
With tears streaming down her face
She scrawls on the rock
I will never forget
Right onto his half
His half of her heart
She brushes away the tears
And gently places the piece back in the creek
Hoping the water will carry it away
Wishing it could do the same for her
She stands up
And with a glimpse at his side
She turns to leave
Hoping he will one day bring another girl here
And both will see what was written today
She begins to walk away
And pauses
Turning her head to peek over her shoulder
She whispers so quietly the creek swallows the sound
I will never forget
