chapter 2

“Time to wake up, Megan! Megan, get up Sweetie!” her mother called from the bottom of the stairs. Megan slowly got up and went downstairs to the kitchen.

“Mom, it’s the first day of summer vacation. Why did you get me up at eight o’clock in the morning?” she asked groggily as she grabbed a bowl and the box of Lucky Charms.

“Because your father and I need to talk to you, Pumpkin.”

“About what, Mom?” Megan asked.

“How can I say this?” her mother said quietly.

“Just tell her, Honey. It isn’t that big of a deal,” said her father overtop of the morning’s newspaper.

“We’re sending you to your grandmother’s for a couple months,” Mrs. Matthews mumbled.

“What!?” screamed Megan,” you can’t. Jamie and I made plans for all summer. We were going to go to the pool, have slumber parties, and a bunch of other fun things. Please, please don’t make me go.”

“Sweetie, it won’t be that bad. And you haven’t seen you grandmother for over two years. It’ll be nice for you to visit.”

“Well, if it’s so nice why don’t you go?” Megan hollered.

“Because your dad and I have a business trip.”

“Well what about Frankie?” Megan asked.

“He’s going to go visit Joey,” her father replied. Frankie was her little brother and Joey was his friend that had moved away to New York a few years ago.

“I don’t want to go. There’s nothing to do.”

“There’s plenty to do. I got through it. You’ll live,” her dad said.

“But I don’t want to go.”

“You’re going and that’s final!” her dad said firmly. Her grandmother lived in the middle of nowhere, Fawnville.

“They’re making you visit your grandma! But what about all our plans for the summer?” Jamie said when talking to Megan on the phone.

“I guess they’ll have to wait until I get back in August,” Megan said sadly.

“So where does she live again?” asked Jamie curiously.

“Fawnville,” Megan said without a trace of enthusiasm.

“Where the heck is that?” Jamie asked again.

“I don’t really know,” Megan replied, “It’s in the middle of nowhere.”

“Megan, get off the phone. I need to make a call,” Mrs. Matthews said from right outside Megan’s bedroom door.

“I have to go. I’ll talk to you when I get back, or I’ll send you a letter,” Megan said quietly.

“Have fun at your grandma’s for the summer,” Jamie said unhappily.

“That’s not likely. Bye.” Megan got off the phone and started packing for the trip she did not even want to go on.
