Chapter 1
"She should have only lived for six months after her diagnosis. The other doctors and surgeons and I don't understand how she's lived this long. I've never seen anything like it," Dr. William Torren told the girl's parents.
That girl, her name was Autumn McGill. Eight years ago, at the age of nine, she was diagnosed with cancer. Autumn was given six months to live, that's how rapidly the cancer was spreading through her body. At the age of nine, she was more mature and wise than people triple her age. But then again, that's what happens when you spend more of your time in the hospital than truly getting to live your life.
Now Autumn was seventeen and about to start her senior year at Oakwood High. Doctors were stunned by how long she had made it. They were running tests at least twice a month to try to figure it out. She and her family chose to call it God's grace that she was still with them all. She had been raised in a Christian home, going to church every Sunday.
Autumn was going through another test just then, and as usual the test had led to a dead end. Dr. Torren was one of her regular doctors. He was a nice enough guy, but he thought there was a scientific explanation for every medical problem, he didn't believe in miracles; but she was losing her faith in them too. After all, why would God put an innocent child and teen through the pain and suffering like that?
**********************************************************
"Autumn! Wake up dear!" Rose McGill yelled as she walked up the stairs to her daughter's room.
"Can't I have ten more minutes?"
"No, you don't have time." Mrs. McGill added getting teary eyed, "I can't believe it, you weren't supposed to make it to this day sweetie. I'm so proud of you."
"You and Dad are the ones that taught me to be a fighter and to never give up on my faith in the Lord. You're what kept me going."
The two hugged as tears began to spill down Mrs. McGill's face. As her mother had said, Autumn shouldn't have woken up this morning. She was supposed to have been gone long ago. They let go and went downstairs for breakfast, where Mrs. McGill had already made Autumn's favorite, triple chocolate chip pancakes.
As soon as breakfast was over and the dirty dishes were in the sink, Autumn went back upstairs to get ready for the day. It was her last first day of high school, all the other first days had led up to this one, the first day of senior year.
She couldn't wait to see her friends again. She had missed them all over the summer since she didn't get to spend as much time with them as she would have liked. She had to skip quite a few parties and other chances to hang out because of testing at the hospital. Each time she had missed, she had to come up with an excuse for why she couldn't go. No one other than her family knew she had cancer; they knew she was sick a lot but they didn't know how serious it was. She just wanted to rush right to school to see her friends, and to see Skyler.
So this was the beginning to my newest story that I've been working on. I've done hardly any editing to this yet, so if you see any problems for it just leave a comment. I don't have a title for it yet either, but if you get an idea for that after a few more chapters just let me know.
