Chapter 2

Skyler Rivers was getting ready to start his last first day as well. He was staring out the window above the kitchen sink as he was eating his breakfast, Lucky Charms with extra sugar added. Even though he was staring out at the mountain line behind their house, he wasn't really seeing it. He couldn't stop thinking about Autumn.
Skyler had been crushing on her for three years, almost four at this point. He couldn't tell her that though, they were best friends and he didn't want to weird out their friendship if she didn't feel the same way. He had met her in the fifth grade, in band of all places. He had realized he liked her around freshman year. Only his best friend, Brian, knew that he had a thing for her. Brian chose to call it 'band geek love'.
"Skyler, Sweetie, you need to get ready for school. You don't want to be late on your first day back. You have fifteen minutes," Mrs. Rivers said, interrupting his daydreams and thoughts.
"Oh, yeah, I was just thinking is all," Skyler mumbled into his cereal bowl.
"I know Honey, it just doesn't seem like this should be your last first day. This year will fly right by and before you know it you'll be headed off to college."
"Um... right. I guess," he said. His mother thought he was thinking about school. So he decided to go with that instead of explaining what he was really thinking about.

Back in the basement, where his room and bathroom were, Skyler began to get ready for the day. He was happy to see his friends again, but he really only cared about seeing Autumn. He knew Brian was sure to pick on him when he was caught staring at her.
Skyler wondered if Autumn looked the same as two months ago when they had hung out at a friend's party. He figured she probably did. Man, he sure hoped so. To him, Autumn was the most beautiful girl in the school.
Sometimes he wished they weren't best friends, maybe then he could have asked her out. But he knew that he probably still wouldn't have had the guts to ask her out, or even to a school dance. Brian just thought he should just take a chance and go for it, he didn't figure it would ruin anything. Skyler just didn't want to take that chance, their friendship meant too much to him to lose even that.
"Skyler! The bus is waiting for you!" Mrs. Rivers yelled down the stairs, "Hurry up!"
Skyler quickly sprayed on his new cologne, the advertisement said girls were supposed to love it, and rushed up the stairs. He hopped on the bus right before the driver shut the doors.
